More than 32 years ago, Sister Faye Huelsmann (M.S., LPC) and Sister Pat Lewter (M.A., LPC) had the vision to provide affordable counseling services in Mesa County. In 1981, they founded the Center for Enriched for Communications, empowering people to change their lives to benefit their families and community. In 1998, the Center merged with another Mesa County nonprofit with similar goals, becoming Counseling and Education Center, or CEC as it often is called.

Although its roots are with these Catholic Sisters from St. Joseph of Concordia, the organization is non-sectarian and all individuals are welcome. Sisters Faye and Pat now lead a team of eight counselors, with facilities centrally located in downtown Grand Junction and easily accessed by car or bus.

CEC provides the community’s only professional outpatient psychotherapy for under/uninsured clients, and without any eligibility requirements. Client-paid fees are subsidized through various fundraising efforts, with the following services available:
• Individual, Couples and Family Counseling, including Low-income Counseling, provided on a sliding scale fee basis for families/individuals of any age.
• Victim Services: Low-cost counseling for victims of crime (individuals/families).
• Children’s Play Therapy: Helping children come to terms with issues/problems in a safe environment where they express and explore feelings, thoughts, experiences and behaviors through natural communication.
• Individual/Group Anger Management Therapy
• Walk-In Crisis and/or Emergencies, meeting emergency and unscheduled client needs.
